Seasonal Fruit Salsa with Cinnamon Tortilla Chips

Going into this recipe I was pretty excited.  Fruit Salsa with Cinnamon tortilla chips, sounds delicious!!  But then I looked at the ingredient list.  Aside from the delicious kiwi, strawberries, mango, etc.  there were a few items that scared me.

Here they are: Scary VeggiesThat is a yellow bell pepper, jalapeño pepper and an onion.

What are those things doing in my fruit?!?!  Oh yeah, its a “salsa,” some people like things to be spicy. Not so much me, we’ll see about this.

Umm…ok, so it turns out I bought the wrong kind of onion.  I guess thats what I get for writing “onion” on my grocery list instead of “green onion”  Well, looks like I won’t be including the onion.  I did not do this on purpose.  Really.

Cutting up all of the delicious fruit was kind of time consuming, but no big deal.  Then I cut up the yellow pepper, and then the dreaded jalapeño.  Seriously the smell of the spiciness was even bothering me.  Hesitantly I mixed everything together.  I did this to challenge myself right?

The cinnamon tortilla chips were very easy to make and SO good.

The salsa on the other hand…..well, at least it looked pretty.  The peppers really ruined it.  Who likes their fruit mixed with peppers? Even my Husband agreed with me on this.  Although he did eat more of it than I did, he was disappointed too.  He decided to make himself a better dessert:

DessertThis, my friends, is cinnamon tortilla chips, leftover bundt cake, and a glob of peanut butter. Yes, since I don’t enjoy peanut butter, he adds it to almost every dessert that I make.

Ease: B-, the chopping up of the fruit and veggies was pretty time consuming – and I might add, getting the mango and orange chopped was quite messy.  As delicious as mango is, it is not easy to to slice and chop.  I thought I knew what I was doing, slicing around the pit and everything, apparently I need practice.
Taste: D for the “salsa.” Seriously, who likes spicy things with their delicious fruit?  Someone must, or this recipe would not exist. The cinnamon tortilla chips, however, were an A+ 🙂
Would I make it again? The salsa? No. Unless I made it without the peppers.  The cinnamon tortilla chips? Yes, most definitely.

What is your favorite of the ordinary flavor combination?
I tried really hard to think of something that I like that is an odd combination, and the best thing that I could come up with is grilled chicken and roasted potatoes on my pizza.

  1. You should try Mrs. Renfros Peach Salsa. A friend served it years ago and forced it on me and it has been my go to salsa ever since. Simply awesome and not a bit HOT. Just thought I’d recommend a yummy fruit salsa option for you. 🙂

    My peach salsa habit would be the most odd flavor combo I love but my husband would probably say my pension for adding ketchup to my scrambled eggs is odd.

    • That sounds familiar, I think maybe I’ve had it before. If not, there is one that is pretty similar that Spencer has gotten that is pretty good. I am a wuss with salsa, anything over mild is too much spice for me. I’ll have to try that one!

      Adding ketchup to scrambled eggs does seem pretty odd, although a lot of times when I am out for breakfast and order scrambled eggs, the server asks if I need ketchup, so maybe it isn’t as odd as you think 🙂

  2. I made a fruit salsa with cinnamon tortilla chips for class a few months ago and it not have peppers. I like spice a lot but I agree peppers and fruit does not equal yum. The one I made had strawberries, kiwi, blueberries, pineapple and some other fruit…maybe blackberries? But to all the fruit all that needed to be added was some sugar and peach preserves and it was yummy! add those cinnamon tortilla chips mmmmm. :)as for weird combos there is a pizza/calzone that I have semi created that includes mozzarella, cream cheese, pepperoni, jalapenos, and chipotle sauce with a little marinara. Highly recommend if you like jalapeno poppers, which I’m suspecting you may not. 🙂
